AMADO MAURILLIO PENA, JR.

Aamado Maurillio Peña, Jr. is Mestizo, born of Mexican and Yaqui Indian ancestry. His paintings depict the history and legends of Canyon de Chelley, Monument Valley, Spider Rock, Enchanted Mesa and Acoma. These ancient lands are now known as Arizona and New Mexico. The people and their native crafts are the inspiration for Pena's work. He celebrates the strength of the Native American people who met the realities of life and learned to live in harmony with the environment. Pena does this through the use of bold, dramatic color and the dynamics of composition. Abstract landscapes merge with human forms and blanket and pottery patterns merge into the design. He is a very prolific artist with tremendous creative energy. Pena has always been involved with furthering the public's knowledge of the Tribe, its art, history and culture. Pena creates images for original paintings, drawings, graphics, ceramics and jewelry.
